What Every Parent Needs to Know About Sibling Sexual Abuse
In April 2023, as I sent off the RESOLVE manuscript to the internal designer, I had the opportunity to attend the introductory webinar for #SiblingsToo Day.
Hosted by producer Nancy Morris in Canada and Gloria Master, founder of Handing the Shame Back in New Zealand, the webinar provided a comprehensive resource pack.
This initiative was made possible by the collaboration of numerous professionals, academics, lived experience experts, donors, sponsors, and volunteers.
The #SiblingsToo Day Videos and Resources pack, along with the launch event, was expertly put together by Nancy Morris. As an attendee, I’m grateful for the permission to share this invaluable resource pack with my connections.
The content of the Video Library is diverse:
- Video 1: Introduction Nancy Morris provides an overview of the video library, its organisation, and access, along with the history and significance of the inaugural #SiblingsToo Day event.
- Video 2: What is SSA? Nancy, along with Stephen Barry, Anat Talmon, and Kieran McCartan, presents facts about Sibling Sexual Abuse (SSA). They discuss its international prevalence and why this conversation is often difficult for parents and society.
- Video 3: Myths and Misinformation Brad Watts and Spencer Bailey debunk myths and misinformation surrounding SSA. This conversation draws from their experience working with affected families.
- Video 4A: Australia Russ Pratt and Dale Tolliday discuss the current Australian perspective on SSA. They shed light on innovative approaches that facilitate societal understanding and support for affected families.
***** Bonus Content: Adult Survivors Speak Out *****
Six adult survivors join Nancy to share poignant insights about the impact of SSA. This group of courageous survivors aim to encourage parents to recognise and address this issue within their families.
Discovering resources like #SiblingsToo Day has been instrumental in my healing journey as a sibling sexual abuse survivor. Writing and therapy have played significant roles, and delving into quality resources has been enlightening.
Whether you’ve been harmed, have caused harm, or are a parent/guardian of children affected by SSA, know that you’re not alone.
Seeking help is crucial, and initiatives like #SiblingsToo are making it more accessible.
I encourage you to download the Resource Pack and explore Nancy’s #SiblingsToo YouTube Channel. Show your support by subscribing and liking the videos that resonate with you. I eagerly anticipate what #SiblingsToo Day 2024 will bring!
Within the pack, you’ll find direct links to the YouTube Video library.
There is also a helpful 15-point Checklist to facilitate conversations about SSA within your family and social circles.
